Dark mulberries don't always mean that they are Morus Nigra. The wild mulberries are found anywhere in the east coast. Here in pa there grow like week in my back yard, I pull them out and use them as understock. Wild mulberries are usually hybrids of Morus Alba x Morus Rubra, they can be really good or insipid.

Morus Nigra usually is better tasting than other species but are not as hardy as the hybrids.

Hello Bassem, I live in central Illinois where there are black fruited Mulberries abound in the wild. I'm not sure of the species. Most are very sweet and juicy. They are so abundant that they are a pest as the birds spread them everywhere and the droppings stain clothing and vehicles bright purple. I can't understand why you wonder if there are any Mulberries for your area.

Matt, the Kokuso sounds very promising for zone 6. Unfortunatly Cliff England was sent to Iraq for military. No one is running the nursery for him. His website is http://www.nuttrees.net/ . I hope yours bears fruits. Would love to obtain cuttings.

I have a variety called Kokuso, originally from Clifford England who is a list member, his website slips my mind. It's been in the ground 3 winters, badly mistreated, and transplanted twice in zone 5, western michigan. It is doing very well, vigorous growth, a little bit of tip dieback, no fruit yet. Supposed to be seedless. Anyways, it's surviving!

I understand that M. nigra mullberries are among the best in flavors. However, all the varieties I've seen may not do well in the cold compared to M. Alba and M. Rubra. Even some M. Alba varieties such as Pakistan, had sever winter kill, but have sprouted back for me. I know that some varieties will taste different even though they'll survive the cold.
Does anyone know of a variety that might do well for my area?
