Are you sure they are seedlings? This spring I removed some small woven-wire
deer-
excluders from separate sask./Amelanchier shrubs (Timm, Success, & unknowns)
and
replaced w/ a larger excluder around the entire patch. A couple days ago I
weeded,
and noticed what I thought at first were seedlings, but investigation
revealed they
are suckers. In previous years apparently rabbits had kept these trimmed
down, and
now my deer-excluder-- also a rabbit-excluder-- is allowing them to grow.

And yes I would pot up & grow seedlings, even if Amel.s were less true to
seed. In
the woods this spring pulling garlic mustard, I had to wonder "Why bother?!"
considering the numbers of buckthorn & honeysuckle. Would be nice to have
more
Amels planted, so the birds can spread around more Amel seeds! And, I've
never
tasted an unpleasant Amel.
