I've also had good business with ForestFarm - good enough that I ordered a tree, but they are sold out.  I will try Oikos, despite their confusing interface.

I'm concerned that the spot I  am looking at is a little too dry for a yellow birch, but I don't expect to have problems with air quality.  The forests of NH have lots of yellow birch (that's where I grew to love them) and I doubt our air is much worse.  In both places the bulk of the air pollution is smog from midwest coal plants.

I once considered purchasing an older house along a major road (not a highway).  I tested the soil for lead in several places.  As expected, there was a lot of lead right next to the house, where years of paint dust had accumulated.  Also, there was elevated lead in the soil near the road.  There was a fairly sharp gradient as you moved away from the road, however, and the side yard (along a minor road, but protected by the house from the major road) was quite clean.   I was shocked at how much difference 100 feet made.

28 years ago when I bought my house, I transplanted about 30 white birch (Betula papyrifera) and 3 Yellow birch (Betula lutea) saplings to my new property. The trees were taken from land about 150 miles north of Toronto and planted in Thornhill, immediately north of Toronto.

The white birth, a delicate species that requires above normal care - especially in dry condidtions, did well. The yellow birch merely existed, growing no more than a few inches per year. The leaves were stunted and mal-formed. I attribute the poor growth to the species intolerance to pollutants in the urban air, something I was told to expect.

I would imagine similar problems exist on the east coast.

If you like the wintergreen flavor (as I do), have you considered Gaultheria?

I would also vouch for Ken Asmus and Oikos Tree Crops (I'd list him first, but I didn't think to look at his
site/catalog).  Ken offers good quality stuff at good prices.  Realize, however that Ken's stuff (in general)
is seedling stock with the variation that it implies.

ForestFarm is a good company, but I need to note two strikes against it.  First, its shipping (particularly to the
East Cost) is very high.  Unless unavailable in any other fashion I will only order tubes from them as otherwise,
price plus shipping starts to be killer.  Second, I have had a percentage of plants from them mislabeled.  I think
this is a natural mistake because of their huge product variety.  I would order from them again.
