Thanks, Lucky, for all the good info.
Since I'm never in Kansas early enough in spring when on-tree grafts
could be made, topworking the Magness tree is not an option. And I
think it may only be asking for more of the same to replace the Magness
tree with a tree of Warren.
Guess I'll remove the Magness and replace it with some other very
blight-resistant cultivar, such as Harrow Sweet. Or, possibly one of
the oriental x European hybrids (Kieffer, Orient, Pineapple?) that
thrive and fruit so well in Kansas. -- Sam

Here's info on Warren and Magness, from the NCGR Pyrus collection:

My Warren on seedling pear rootstock took a minimum of 8 years to bloom
and set a small crop of fruit. There are numerous other pears planted
in its proximity, but none are of blooming/fruiting age - the older,
bearing pears are easily 300 ft. away, on the other side of the pond.
Magness - and a half-dozen other varieties on OHxF513 should have been
transplanted to the area around Warren this spring, but I just didn't
get it done.
