I second this recommendation, even though a lot of the apples listed aren't antiques.  It gives lots of information about pests, disease, and management in a non-threatening way, as well as having lots of information about particular trees.

The book, Apples for the 21st Century, by Warren Manhart,  ISBN 0-9648417-0-3.1995. North American Tree Company,D.B.A.Portland Nursery, 5050 S.E.Stark Street, Portland, Oregon 97215 is a very good starting place.  Mr. Manhart covers the 50 best apples for all climates, including a good number of heirlooms.  The book is slightly dated now, as there have been more new varieties out since it was published, but the antiques covered are some of the best, and there is lots of information on rootstock performance, etc. as well.

Hello All,

How do you answer the question for a person looking to plant their first
apple trees, and they do not want the varities found in the supermarket,
they want an antique or heirloom variety.

First I applaud their decision, but with thousands to choose from, how do
you explain it?

Later,
Tom
