If I recall correctly, apples and pears will do okay above 40 degrres (F),
but stone fruits are fussier, and should be between 60 and 70 degrees. I
keep benchgrafts of apricots in a 5 gallon bucket with their roots in damp
peat moss, covered with a black garbage bag, and in a corner of my
sunroom/greenhouse, and try to keep them at the right temp. This spring one
of my apricots, grafted April 15th, has already grown over 9", and another is
doing almost as well. Last year I did the same with apricots and plums, with
good success. I don't have any references at hand to give better temperature
ranges, but perhaps someone else will chime in.
(This is the second year that I have had any success with grafting, and it
looks like 11 out of 12 bench grafts have taken so far this year.)

I grafted a new scion on an apricot that is in my nursery bed, also in
mid-April, and then I made a cylinder of Remay that I put around the tree to
moderate the temperature, and it is showing good growth now.

A few weeks ago, I made several whip and tongue grafts of various scions
(apple,
pear, peach, and plum) onto dwarfing rootstocks. So far, only one graft has
taken, a
NY 1502 plum on Krymsk rootstock. These trees are under a canopy on the south
side of my home. Question is would I help the grafting process by moving
these
plants indoors, considering the outside temperatures here in zone 5 have been
hovering around the low 40's for the past few days? I hesitate to move these
pots
because they are heavy and I haven't much room indoors.
