Or if you have room, plant another rootstock elsewhere, and graft these cultivars to them, so you have a replacement ready when the first trees die.
But I vote for "enjoy them now". Plants die for all sorts of unpredictable reasons.

Hi Jim,
If I were you, I would plant additional rootstock around the current single
stemmed plum tree and then graft these plum rootstock to the scion cultivar. This
way even if the tree is over growing its one current rootstck it is supported and
nourished by additional roots. You may end up having to use some 2 x 4 braces for
support of the main trunk/crown, but the additional rootstock should help the
nutritional strangling issue. I did this on a plum that had severe girding a few
years ago. Worked fine.
If someone said this already, forgive the repetition.
Let us know what you end up trying,

If the graft is close to the ground, you could add soil around the base ofchange other email options):
the tree up to above the graft union. The stronger tree above would
hopefully make roots to support itself.
I have seen the same phonomenon with pears grafted on hawtnorne. Eventually
the graft cannot support the top growth.

Hello,
Would partial girdling (lack of food), slow the process?

A few of my plum grafts, that I have performed ten years ago, have
problems. The diameter of the top is growing faster than the diameter

these were your trees, what would you do to prolong their life?
