Hello,

It is my experience that anybody interested in fruit, that I run into, is more than willing to share their fruit resources. Either free or at a nominal cost It is not a matter of sharing, but building public interest.

I can list a number of our local nurseries that don't even offer fruit of any kind. People either do not have time, or interest in the growing fruit.

I find that local gardening clubs, or horticultural societies do not offer anything for those interested in fruit. Hence, long distance NAFEX.

Not long ago, at a home and garden show, I asked at the local horticultural group's booth if they offered grafting classes. They looked at me as if I had two heads, and told me grafting was as art akin to magic. I think these clubs like to lug and plug (buy beautiful plants, plant them, puff out their chest's and say "Look what I did"). All they did was dig a hole. I know, I know. Very cynical and hard hearted of me to say, but annual lugging and plugging does not appeal to my practical gardner side.

If you cannot complete the gardening in an hour today, very few are interested.

How can we change that?

Later,
Tom

Lon,
I think you're making a good point.
I think often the problem is that the owner doesn't have any family or local friends who have enough interest to turn it over to. Maybe we could set up a system within NAFEX where a member could advertize that they want to turn it over to a resource or (better) several resources (I say more than one is better, as a single recipient, even if they believe they are interested, may cause a failure in the turnover just because of number of reasons.
I'm not sure of the best way to go about this however.
Take care.
