Pete pxbacher.ls@comcast.net asked:
Do you know if the elusive LCC persimmon was ever found? I see only one
reference to it in the Claypool records. It would appear that either it
was not located or it did not turn out to have the desired Szukis-like
characteristics.
Dear Pete,
Several years back a trip to Lincoln College in IL was made and yes I feel quite sure that the persimmon in quest was found. The retired Professor was still alive in his nineties and seemed mentally sharp. He showed me the tree. I found no staminate petioles on the tree, only pistillate. I grafted it here and after about 5 years it started bearing fruit. Small, fully seeded and no sign of staminate flowers. I have written that one off.
I don't recall the names right now, but also located the original property of the man who first reported it. There were maybe a dozen persimmon trees still in the yard and saw only pure pistillate and staminate trees.
