Welcome Melinda!

I can't say what is wrong with your raspberries, but you could be right
that the heat's too much.  You could also have gotten a diseased
selection raspberries.  If you want to keep trying with them, I suggest
keeping them irrigated and mulched (mulch to keep the roots cooler and
moist.).  Don't compare blackberry flowers too much to red raspberries.
They're similar, but blackberry flowers are far more showy.

My (Fall Red) raspberries have very visible flowers.  No one would grow them as an ornamental, but there's no way you'd miss that they are in bloom if you were looking for it.

According to Stark's catalog red raspberries are rated to zone 8 and
Raintree rates them to zone 9.  So you should have been OK.

Maybe not enough chill hours?  I think chill hours are hours of moderate cold, like 40-50F.  My understanding is that when you get very far north you can run into "not enough chill hours" problems, too, as the temp drops so quickly below the point where the plant is really metabolizing.

Whatever the problem, I suggest you try another raspberry, or one from another source.  That one doesn't seem well-suited to your conditions.  A non-bearing raspberry is a weed.

Best luck,
Ginda
