Hello,

There is also a tip for peach trees.

You are supposed to put a bushel of "marl" around the trunk of the tree. Marl is a mixture of lime and clay.

It is supposed to protect them from crawling insects and extend their life, along with other claims. This sounds suspect to me.

Another indicates that cool, sifted woodash sprinkled on vines will keep away insects. Early "Surround" (kayolin clay) I suppose.

I thought that sounded familiar, and sure enough, we have a copy my

We think of catsup as made of tomatoes, now, but at one time it was
simply a sauce that could be made of many things. I've got a recipe
for grape catsup, for example.

Hello,

There is an interesting old book (1869) here with many odd entries that
pertain to fruit and nuts.

"Wright's book of 3000 practical receipts, or complete book of
reference,
containing valuable and important receipts for medicine, cookery,
pastry,
preserving, pickling, confectionary, distilling, perfumery, varnishing,
chemicals, dyeing, and agriculture, by A.S. Wright."

Who knew you could make walnut wine (page 8), or walnut catsup? (page 7)

The instructions for currant wine (page 128) are there too, along with
making grafting wax (page 6).

Very different approach to rooting apple cuttings on page 312.

Tom
