I was picking jostaberries 'til dark. And
contemplating several questions on the universe.
First: if I make more jostaberry jam I will
use pectin; last year I followed the prevailing thinking of lots of natural
pectin in currants and jostaberries--don't need to add more; my
jostaberry jam was very runny; phooey on the natural pectin theory
Second: I labeled my pie last year at work "Fruit
Explorers fruit of the year--Jostaberry", a few sampled, no one ate a whole
piece. This year with my first picking, I doubled the sugar and labeled
the pie "Fruit Explorers test 'blue'berries"--the girls gobbled it up and
wondered when I'd be bringing more; I am the admitted scam
artist; I OK it in my mind figuring I gave them a good dose of vitamin
C
Third: I am getting older; I dug out the
mighty "bucket-buddy" five gallon bucket with plastic seat and used that for
picking this year; I almost killed myself crouching and picking for hours last
year;
I think my learning curve is always
improving! I owe it all to this mighty learn-ed group. Many
thanks.
Most sincerely,
