I was talking to a commercial orchardist I know about Forelle pears. This variety is an amazing example of the way people buy (with their eyes, not their taste) as it is striking mainly for it's odd shape and it's attractive appearance (red blush over bright yellow background on an oddly shaped, rather small pear). What amazes me is that here in Oregon fireblight is a real rarity most of the time, but Forelle manages to get it when absolutely nothing else does. The tree is biennial in bearing, as well, and has to be grown more as a bush than a tree, to aid in fireblight control. With all that, my friend still grows it because it's his more profitable pear. People pay top prices for it just because of it's looks. It's NOT a particularly flavorful variety, though. at least as it grows here.

My question is, "Does anyone know of a pear with the attractive appearance of Forelle, but on a healthier, better tree?
