Title: Message
I thought those of you in very cold climates might like to know about the availability of St. Lawrence Nurseries' (Potsdam, N.Y.)  'Northrup' mulberry. -- Sam Brungardt, St. Paul, Minn.

Hi, Bill.  There's been discussion on the NAFEX listserv about mulberries, and someone mentioned the hardy mulberry selection that you had listed in your catalog.

However, when I accessed your catalog on line, I could not find the mulberry listed.  Do you still propagate and sell it, and what was the cultivar's name?  Also, what can you tell us about its hardiness, fruit quality, etc.?  In your opinion, is it Morus alba or Morus rubra or a hybrid?

Thanks in advance for your reply.

We've had a real mixed up winter here in St. Paul, Minn., with several spells of warm weather (we even got up to 52 degrees F one day).  It's making winter seem shorter and helping with the utility bills, but seems strange nonetheless.  -- Sam Brungardt

Hi, Sam. This is Diana answering for Bill. Yes, we did have a mulberry called Northrup. We are out of stock now and have been for a couple years running. We've found this cultivar doesn't graft worth a darn, so we tried having a lab grow it in tissue culture. We got some propagated, and offered them for a while, but then the lab had some problems and we sold out all we had. We expect to have it again in the future.

I'm pretty sure it is Morus alba, and was found growing on the Northrup farm near here...the only mulberry for many miles around. It was apparently self-fertile because it produced fruit.

Horticordially,
