Hi Diane,
I learned from John Meader, Elwyn Meader's talented son, that peaches can
take many
years, sometimes as many as 3 or 4, to germinate. I would not be suprised if
in
direct sowing situations the same is true for apricots. Also, apricots are
more
likely to sprout in the sandier, drier soil, rotting if kept moist
constantly. This
might be the biggest deterrent for your breeding project: cool moist weather.
In
northern New Mexico, apricots grow to perfection. Don't let my input slow you
down,
because we all see soooooooooo many exceptions to the "rules". And in this
case you
are looking for the exceptions so all the better!
