Several years ago, I bought some Black Elderberry, wondering how well it
would do here in North Central Minnesota. It thrived, so I bought more. It
also thrived but proved to be different than the first plants It's growth
habit was slightly different and its berries failed to ripen until very late
in Fall with many freezing before they got ripe.
I bought all plants from the same company and assumed they to all be
alike. Wrong! So I looked up Sambucus in Britton & Brown. As it turns
out, my second batch of plants are Sambucus nigra, a European introduction
and the first ones, those that are best suited for my climate, are Sambucus
canadensis.
