Based on Ed Flackler's recommendation for a fireblight-resistant Asian
pear, I planted Shinko down at my parent's home in Hays, Kansas (USDA
Zone 5b) maybe 10 or so years ago. It has been incredibly productive,
and the fruit need to be thinned heavily early in the growing season if
they are to attain any size. True to its reputation, it has never shown
any fireblight infection. Only one year have the fruit lacked flavor,
and that was when I failed to thin them adequately. Mother uses them
fresh, but also cans them and they are quite good if one can get used to
crunchy canned pears. -- Sam Brungardt, St. Paul, Minn.

From Purdue's information, it appears that pixie crunch and sundance
are exclusively licensed to Rocky Meadow, now aka a Gardens Alive
company. So it does show up in some of the Gardens Alive company
catalogs, such as Henry Fields. But I'm having trouble finding any
evidence that it is actually orderable anywhere. If anyone can enlighten
me, I'll be grateful.
P.S.: I'm also looking for Japanese pear suggestions. I have Shinko and
Shinseiki and have been very pleased with the fruit. As have been all
the people to whom I gave samples. :-) I also have a Korean Giant/Don
Bae/Olympic which has yet to fruit. The question is, if I were to put in
a couple more asian pears, should I choose another Shinko and Shinseiki,
or are there others I should consider?
Supporting info:
* Heavy clay soil. I do make small hills to help with the heavy end of
May rains.
* Zone 5b.
* I have had serious fireblight. Only once, but it was really nasty on
the European pears.
Any thoughts?
