Deb:

Fall planting is the best as the roots grow way into winter and you need not
water the new trees as much the next summer. Be careful with mulch. If you
use it put tree guards on the young trees to protect them from voles.

Bruce.

Hi Deb,

I think I saw one other response on this and I agree with what was said.
I'm in the same zone as you and have had great success with fall plantings
(probably better than spring!). I'd add that if you fertilize at time of
planting, I'd delay it until spring and also I think mulching is more
important in the fall to protect against frost heave and ameliorate the
temperature swings/extremes on the young and damaged roots.

Good luck!

Mark

I am awaiting delivery of several fruit trees (pear, cherry) from a
nursery. I've never planted trees in the fall before, is there anything
special I should do? The weather has been unusually pleasant here in zone
5/6 (we're right on the line in SE Ohio). Thanks in advance for any help!
