I saw Sherwood a couple of years ago ... at a meeting of SFF somewhere
down south. He must be pushing 90.

Thanks for the update. When I requested a
list from him he wrote (in shakey handwriting) he no longer did this. He has apparently either
regained some health and energy or didn't want to deal with mail
order.

I visited Sherwood Akin on my way home from the
June '04 SFF meeting in Arkansas. His inventory of plants in his nursery is
still extensive for a person his age working alone. In recent years he is
devoting a lot of time propagating citrus, especially cold hardy selections.
He addressed this in the article submitted and printed in the most recent
issue of POMONA. His travel is limited because if the care required by his
wife, an Alzheimer's patient.
In regards to "Rush Chinknut", it has been
dropped from his inventory of plants.
Sherwood is not" on line" but this message has
been coordinated with him by phone and meets with his approval.

I tried to get some citrus material from Mr.
Akin a few years back. He is out of the plant business due to
age.

Victor,
The
advertisement in Pomona (published 20
years ago) was from J.S. Akin in Sibley,
LA. I have
done some more research and found this entry in the Fruit,
Berry and Nut
Inventory, 3rd edition
Sherwoods
Greenhouses, PO Box
6,
Sibley,
LA
71073,
318-377-3653
This is the
only source listed for Rush Chinknut from 1988 to the
present.

chestnut does not seem to do well in southeast Texas but
the chinquapin does, maybe the hybrid would also. Can you tell me which
nursery had the
add? Victor
