I was able to taste a lot of Asians in one place at the Germplasm Repository at Corvallis and I can testify that there is quite a range of flavors. Some of the Asian pears have an aromatic flavor reminiscent of quince.

Another addition to this thread...
I cut open one of these asian pears this morning that I picked last week
while doing some "Urban Fruit Exploring" in an alley near my office.
Wow. Probably the best asian pear I have eaten. Sugary sweet with
tropical fruit punch flavors. It tastes like a blend of pineapple,
mango and guava. If I juiced this, I'm sure no one would guess it came
from a pear tree. I didn't know such flavors could be produced in the
Pacific Northwest. I wonder if it would taste differently after a more
typical summer than we had this year (hotter than normal).
