You are referring to Richard Fahey. His Crown Jewel is a recent find of his own, while this other "Jewel" is much older, since the orchard in question in the original letter was known to be at least 80 years old.

The article was written by a fellow that also was a advocate of the Christian homestead movement (the name escapes me at the moment) the Name of the apple is Crown Jewel  --  A light red apple with green blushes.   The top is covered with a light crown of Russet flowing near the stem end and over the top the taste is a fine grain winter apple that sweeten over a long period.
