Title: Re: [NAFEX] soil solarizaton
The most effective method I've seen uses clear plastic.  Soak the area first, then put the clear plastic over it.  Heat is actually generated in the soil and is held by the plastic.  The moisture allows better conduction of the heat into the soil so it kills the roots more effectively.    Even at that, the recommendations I've seen suggest that you should leave the plastic in place for at least six weeks before using the area.

This is where we let the sun sterilize the soil by putting something,
like black plastic, on the ground for a time and letting the heat kill the
weeds, grasses, and hopefully most seeds. My sister-in-law put down a black
plastic over her bermuda lawn, without any tillage, then awhile later, she
cut the slits where she wanted her tomatoes and squash and she had a
beautiful garden. That surprised me back then. Oh yes, add fertilizer
underneath if needed.
