Better to get a shagbark or shellbark seedling, from a known-superior tree, and plant that. The hickory experts in the NNGA most left off growing the "smooth-barked" hickories such as mockernut and restricted their growing to the shags and shells.
I agree. Shagbark & shellbark - even row-run seedlings, will most likely produce a better quality, usable nut than a mockernut, and the ornamental qualities will be similar, if not better - shaggy exfoliating bark, good golden yellow fall color, and spring budbreak on many is quite striking - I have one selection with red-tinted buds.
There has been at least one mockernut selection made for nut quality - I got a piece of 'Lakeview"(I think that was the name) from David Johnson, the NNGA Hickory chairman, several years back, but it didn't survive the first season - leafed out, then died. Don't know if it didn't like its pecan understock or what.
I mainly utilize mockernut nuts & husks for boiling up/down to make hickory syrup - be on the lookout for an article in an upcoming issue of Pomona &/or the NNGA Nutshell on this.
