Tom, I think a grafted branch would be just fine. You don't need a full
crabapple tree. Crab pollen is perhaps the most potent of all apple pollen,
and the bees really hum around the crab in my orchard much more heavily than
around the regular apples. In terms of flowering dates, in my climate, they
all basically bloom at the same time! This is common in zone 3. My
earliest apples still overlap the bloom period of my latest apples, but I
understand in milder climates this is not the case.
