A surefire way to catch these munchers is to build a cabin and oil the logs, then sleep in the cabin. You'll hear them munching on the logs at night whereby you wake (out of a sound sleep usually) and shoot them. Bury them right away, killing them seems to attract other porcupines, (I suspect because of the salt in the blood, spilling even a teaspoon of salt outside seemed to attract them, or perhaps due to sex hormones released when shot). I shot seventeen one summer using this method.
