Loudoun County, VA has again declared war on farmers - this time claiming
that seedbeds for fruit trees must be so heavily mulched as to prevent
erosion (which also of course prevents most germination!!)
Under state law, agriculture is exempt, but LOCO (what a suitable name
:-) claims that fruit trees are not agricultural.
Our current seeding programme is for apples and poncirus trifoliata
(Hardy Orange). We have lots of recipes for apples, esp. "wild" ones for
cider, but are very short on the poncirus. Does ANYONE, PLEASE have a
recipe for ewither candied peel, or for jam or jelly from the pulp of these
things. Dirr refers to an excellent jam from them, but fails to provide
more information. His references plus a recipe (which we will use
immediately for our first crop - we have some 10 bushels of fruit now),
should win the day for us and take the regulator back outr of agriculture as
intended by the state legislature.
This is sort of important as if the precedent is set that this is NOT
agriculture, it can open the door to massive regulation by bureaucrats
everywhere who can't tell you where peanuts come from (we were told by one
inspector that they came from trees like all nuts - we were tempted to ask
if he came from a tree as he could be classified as a nut as well...... but
we did not :-(
