My Tokas this year were an extraordinarily aromatic, eye-popping
wonder! The finest plums I have had thus far. They vary in taste a
fair amount from year to year for me. Perhaps the dry summer here
concentrated flavor. You also have to be sure to thin very well.
I got my material from Frank Folz of Northwind Nursery. Be
careful. Hansen's South Dakota material has been terribly confused since
the turn of the century.

To my knowledge, Toka is a really good plum pollinator and is used by
monay people for that purpose. I haven't had plums on my Toka yet, but
the samples I have had from the orchards are pretty good tasting, a little on
the spicy side. Superior can also be used as a pollinator, but it isn't as
effective as Toka. Superior is sweet and very good tasting (U of
Minnesota release in the 1930s?). Both of these varieties do well up to
zone 4, or even up to Zone 3.

Yesterday I planted a Santa Rosa plum
tree. It seems that I need a pollinator. I wonder what would be a good
choice for another variety for quality of fruit, disease resistance,
ease of growth, etc. - for zone 5?
