My preference is for a hardware firewall, such as Linksys or any comparable
product for the same basic price as software. No configuration. No need to
upgrade when you get a new operating system. Just plug it in and go. And
you can protect more than one system with it.
Also keep in mind if you are running Windows XP it has a personal firewall
built in that just needs to be enabled.
As long as you have a connection to the Internet nothing will protect you
100%, but a few simple steps can cut down on a lot of headaches.

Anybody (ANYBODY) who has DSL or cable needs to have a personal firewall
installed. Most Linux distributions have this by default. Most people
have no need to have _any_ ports open to the Internet.
If you are running Windows, go out and buy a personal firewall. Norton
or McAfee or something and install it. Otherwise, somebody untalented
and antisocial will break into your computer without your knowledge and
use it to bother the rest of us. This is apparently more fun to them
that reformatting your hard drive.
I found this site through Google while looking for some common firewall
software, and thought it might help.

If you need help, email me. I've been computing for 29 years, and doing
system administration for the last 13. Please help us clean up the mess
that the Internet has become.
