Any opinions on planting 3 trees together of
the European plum type?
My reply:
My limited experience with European plums is that as a group they tend to
have more fungal problems, hence I believe they benefit from air
circulation. In general I would rather multigraft to Europeans some
distance apart then deal with probable fungus problems.
I have to admit I am a bit perplexed as to why some of you are having such
problems. I am in what amounts to zone 4b and I have no problem with my
plums. Perhaps it is just a timing issue; by that I mean a combination of
cold and damp that keeps your pollinators form flying at bloom time. Also,
something to consider is fertilizer. I basically do not fertilize plums as
my experience has been they tend to put nitrogen into new growth and not bud
development.
