Sybil, one of mine died last year but it is back going strong this year. I can't tell for sure but it might be coming up from the rootstock. I have a big problem with the clay-colored beetle on this Kaki. The others ones aren't bothered too much with them but the native persimmons are periodically. Clemson U. told me to use Sevin on them and had trouble understanding why I worry about persimmons.
I had a few hives of bees until the soybean agriculturists wiped them out with their pesticides and I can't see me applying Sevin.
Maybe the nutritional status drew the beetles due to too much or too little of something and that caused the sudden death thing. This Kaki was displaced from the others in an open field. It suffered higher winds than the others. So it could be that stress had something to do with this, I'd be surprised if it didn't
