How do trees catch viruses, anyway? I know they can get them from a graft, but there must be a natural way viruses spread, or we wouldn't have so many of them.
I wouldn't want a rootstock that's extremely susceptible to viruses in my backyard. It might be okay for a commercial grower who plans to take out many of his trees from time to time to keep up with the latest fad, and so doesn't mind that his trees are short-lived. But I don't have many trees, and can't give them idea conditions, so they grow rather slowly. Once I get something I like, I prefer if it doesn't just drop dead unexpectedly because it picked up some bug.

Dear Mike,
In the lead article of the most recent edition of Compact Fruit Tree,
the publication of the International Dwarf Fruit Tree Association, the
authors indicate the advantages of G-16 over M 9 are better fireblight
resistance and slightly better yield. The downside is the extreme
sensitivity to latent viruses in the grafted scion which can abruptly kill
the tree. I have had that happen here in Houston. Thus, grafted wood must
be virus free. They also claim that it is not yet clear if G-16 is cold hardy.

just when I thought I would order trees on Bud 9 my friend suggested that
Geneva 16 might be a superior rootstock. Any thoughts on this?
