I had always imagined sugar plums to be a sugar coated (preserved with sugar) dried fruit - I suppose they must be sugar coated prunes. Like candied ginger and candied orange peel, only sticky and sweet and pruney.

Ugh.

But my son would like them.

Have a cheery Saturnalia, and a prosperous Kwanzaa.

It's once again the sugar plum fairies time of year, right?
Got me thinking, are these a famously forgotten fabled fruit? or do they perchance have a binomial nomenclature all their own? Google to the rescue... found sites selling candy, candles, unmentionables, and...alas, real California grown sugar plums http://www.mountlassen.com/products/fruits/fruits-dtl-sgrplms.html but they aren't saying what the little devils actually are, any clues?
Wishing all of you sweet plums and an occasional dancing fairie this holiday season, Del
