The Albemarle Pippin apple originated in Newtown, Long Island in the 1700's,
but grew particularly well in Albemarle and Nelson Counties of central
Virginia, so it also acquired the name Albemarle Pippin. It was and is one
of the longest-keeping apples in root cellar-type conditions. So many were
shipped to England from Albemarle County in the 1800's that it made some
growers quite well-off if not wealthy.

It was once thought that the Newtown Pippin and the Yellow Newtown and the
Green Newtown might be three separate apples, but it was long ago proven
that they are one and the same, by growing all three together. Apparently
different soil types make the resulting apples differ. In Albemarle and
Nelson Counties the apple grew particularly well in the soil of some
mountain hollows, i.e. a dark sandy loam, which came to called "pippin
land". That is the soil type I have here in my land in Albemarle County.
Unfortunately, even grown in pippin land, the Albemarle Pippin does not do
particularly well with spray neglect - I speak from experience from my trees
and a neighbor's.

The taste is superb, particularly if stored at least a couple of months.
The best apples are tree-ripened -- if ripened in the sun there can be a bit
of a pink blush on the best ones. I have made pure cider from Albemarle
Pippins, about which I have heard exclaimed immediately many times "This is
the best cider I have ever had".

P.S. Rollin Woolley in Gloucester Virginia sells Albemarle Pippins grafted
from my last living tree planted in the 1890's. He's a good guy.
