Hello,

Isn't heavy cropping nature's way of dealing with abnormal, adverse
growing conditions? If the parent plant dies, it will more likely be
replaced if it produces a lot of seed.

I know of an apple tree that was girdled, and then repaired with a inarch
graft, it flowered more heavily in the following year than it ever had
before. My guess is that is was responding to the serious injury. We
picked off all the fruit, in hopes of the energy going into the repair
graft.

I have heard experts advice giving nut trees a good bruise on the trunk to
encourage more nuts, and root pruning is commonly used to produce
tremendous shows of flower, that otherwise would not occur.

Many wisteria vines will not flower until root pruned, as they are just
too fat and happy. Root prune them (at the right time) and you will get a
huge show in the spring and a second in late summer.

Just natures way.

That is my take on heavy cropping during abnormal, adverse growing
conditions.

Later,
Tom
