David
I was demonstrating grafting to a couple of newbees early. I was showing the a bark graft early april. I cut of a branch 3/4 inch diameter on an apple tree. prepared the scion then proceded to cut the slit and the bark would not slip. I told them it won't work but I was going to finish the graft to show them the procedure. I took the point of the knive and worked as much away to make it look right. I finished the supposed graft. That graft is growing and is a great looking graft with branches 18 inches long. Surprise surprise.

I agree, but don't know anyother way to get the bark slipping - chip bud is
doesn't require slipping bark, but without active cell division occuring
I'd expect a low percentage of takes - I think it would still be possible to
give a weak growing dwarf stock a little 'bump' without much danger
ofcarrying soft growth into the winter - DOUD
