There's another factor at work with the spread of the callery seedlings.
All Bradford pears are grafted. On what? Most often, P. calleryana
seedlings. Every so often a graft fails and the seedling grows up. The
average person doesn't know the difference, but the seedling can pollinate
the Bradford, and fruit set results. There are a lot of Bradfords planted
in Salem, Oregon and I've seen fruit on many of the trees over the years.
Obviously, there have been pollen sources around almost as long as there
have been Bradfords.
