I agree. I've grafted onto combo M111/M9 rootstocks in the past , some with as much as 2-3 ft of the M9 interstem above ground(the M111/M9 union below ground level), and I can't see any difference in them, as contrasted to those grafted lower, within 6 inches or so of ground level - except that the high-grafted ones seem to want to grow horizontally in relation to the 'trunk' - but that may be more a consequence of my lack of training new growth after the scion pushed growth.
