Hi all,
We have a fine apple variety, Mattamuskeet, which originated many years
ago in the Coastal plain of North Carolina. It is still being raised in a
few locations there and is very popular as a fresh eating apple and is a
superb long-keeper. It also performs very well here in the mountains of
North Carolina. Interested growers can read more about this variety on our
web site at http://www.bighorsecreekfarm.com/Descriptions3.htm#Mattamuskeet.
Can apple growers in North Carolina and other regions in the Southeast
send in reports regarding potential crop losses with the freezing
temperatures this week? Our entire apple crop as well as our plums and
blueberries were destroyed by sub-freezing temperatures the last two days.
This is the third year in a row we have suffered devastating losses from
late spring freezes. We hope most growers fared better than us. Good luck to
all.
