Dear Pete,
The Sherwood has a very upright growth habit in comparison with other
named varieties. Mine is from Sherwood Akin and a rootsucker of the
original seedling plant which he claims he found by divine inspiration. As
it has gotten older, it has developed some lateral branches giving some
width to it. It makes plenty of rootsuckers, some 20 to 30 ft from the
trunk, as all jujubes do. They are easily mowed and not really a problem.
I don't know if the Sherwood suckers any more or less than the wild type,
which makes a jujube about the size of a small marble. Sam Powers
(PowersSG@aol.com) is our regional jujube guru and has a Li and a Lang that
are about 40-50 years old as well as most every other named variety and can
tell you the growth characteristics of these trees in the deep South.
Regards, Ethan
