Kevin
If your trees are seedlings and even of the same variety and you have at
least 3 I would say you will have pollination

Kevin,
Most of the published information on pollen-shed and nutlet receptivity
patterns/compatibilities has been done with the Southern pecan varieties.
Not
much out there in print on the northern/midwestern and far northern
varieties,
though I'd bet that John H. Gordon, Jr.(is that where you've ordered your
trees?) and some of the other NNGA members growing pecans in short-season
northern climes may be able to shed more light on which of those varieties
have compatible pollen-shed and nutlet receptivity patterns.
Most of the Southern pecan literature breaks the cultivars into protandrous
and protogynous groups, but even within the two groups, there's a lot of
variation and overlap.
The more cultivars you can plant, the better your chances of getting good
all-around pollenation. Here in southern KY, I pretty much break the
northern/midwestern varieties down into early, mid, and late season pollen
shed. For example:
The old (and still) gold standard pecan cultivar for this part of the
country,
"Major", produces prodigious amounts of pollen in the early to mid season,
setting good crops of nuts on most of the protogynous cultivars, but needs
mid
to (very)late pollen to set nuts. The Major ortet was very productive in
its
original site - a 400 acre block of native pecans in the Green River delta
near Henderson/Owensboro, KY - but when it was first selected and
propagated,
back in the early 1900s, production was disappointing, as it had been moved
away from whatever tree(s) in that forest were producing late-season pollen
to
set good crops on it. While Posey, Greenriver & Peruque will pollenate some
Major flowers, late pollen-shed varieties, such as Hodge, Lattus, and
Chetopa
are really needed to maximize yields on Major.
If you've not contacted John Gordon, drop him a line - I think he may be
your
best source of information on pollenation compatibilities of the far
northern
selections.

NNGA has an 'ask the experts' page - check it out at:
http://www.northernnutgrowers.org
The USDA Pecan Breeding and Genetics website has some information on a few
of
the northern/far northern varieties, including descriptions and nut photos,
but most of their info is geared toward the Southern cultivars. (I think
this
URL is correct, but if not, it's close)
