Hi folks. At university, we got about 100% rooting with P. persica using
mist beds. I was hesitant to try
rooting prunus without a mist bed, but Gianni inspired me to give a simpler
method a try. I used an
alcohol/IBA dip and stuck the semi-hardwood cuttings in well-drained potting
soil and bagged the whole
arrangement with a large plastic bag (not clear- a white bag to reduce sun
intensity and heat). I put that
contraption on a shady side of the yard and, like Gianni said, I misted it
with a misting attachment on a hose
periodically (continuous for 1st 24 hours, then every few days for the next
few weeks). I stuck 5 cuttings from
a wild peach and 3 each from a Peento and an Indian Blood Cling. I just
transplanted the results: 2 wild
peaches with >>>extensive<<< root systems (over 2 feet long and plentiful)
and one IBC with a few roots, all
less than 5 inches long. One of the Peentos stayed leafy and green for
months, but it was dead today.
So the bag system can work, though no where nearly as well as a proper mist
bed. I don't know if the same
procedure would work on P. tomentosa, the reference book I look at most often
"Reference Manual of
Woody Plant Propagation" by Dirr & Heuser recommends this... Softwood
cuttings (though they say July- so
depending on where you are this may be semi-hardwood); 8000 ppm IBA talc
(good luck finding IBA talc at
that concentration through normal channels) plus thiram in sand with mist
(specifics on the mist aren't listed,
but probably 5 second mistings every minute would work). They got 100%
rooting- 'bout like what we used to
get with peach when we had a mist bed. Del, if you really want to root a lot
of cuttings, setting up a mist bed
would be worth it. If I remember right, the peach cuttings were done with
much less IBA (2500 ppm), but I
used a 5-second alcohol dip instead of talc, so the effective concentration
may be essentially the same.
Zone 7/ 8 and hopin' Winter and rain comes soon.
