Thanks for all your comments re split bark. I had forgotten to mention
that these trees did have white plastic spring-ey wraps around them
during the winter and I have never used any weed killer in this area.
I'm trying to organicallty raise these trees despite the overall wisdom
of the NAFEX discussion group. So I'll take Ed's advice and not worry
about it. The trees do in fact look ppretty healthy and do have fruit
on them. Thanks
