Poor pollination, possible frost damage are two causes.  Don't worry, though - if you have one fruit every 6 inches, that's still all the tree can carry safely.  If the crop is smaller, the fruit will be bigger.

Have lost half my fruit to premature peach drop?
What the heck causes this?
