Bernie,

It's even easier in my area, zone 7/8, to cut off the top at about 28" and
put new
grafts in at this level ...easier on the back.

This won't work for vole-damaged rootstocks, but it does work if you just
want to
change varieties on an otherwise healthy r/s.

Some orchardists in this area have successfully worked over apple trees at
this
level when caliper was three inches.

I had a couple of fruit in the second year on an M26 I grafted over.

Another thing to try is to put on a 12" scion and you'll get branching in the
first year. This is not my idea, it came from a researcher in NZ.

If the tree is of
: relatively small caliper, under 2 inches in diameter down to about 1/2 inch
: in diameter, just cut off the entire tree at, or almost at ground level.
: Then place 2 or 3 bark grafts on the small stump with the new variety
: wanted
