Hi,

Two layers of newspaper covered with mulch works fine too, and is easier
to come by than cardboard. It is also easier for water to penetrate and
get into the soil.

You just need to present a barrier to the weed seed that it cannot get
through or around.

Saves weeding the tomatos, and any other area.
