Being acquainted with both the Irish Peach and the Peach Apple of Montreal, I
can say positively that these are not the same apple. The Peach Apple of
Montreal is a very common apple here in northern NH and VT and right across
the border in Quebec. I have found it to be one of several apple varieties
consistently planted in both home and larger orchards during the early to mid
part of the 20th century. The others are Duchess of Oldenburg, Yellow
Transparent, Wolf River
and Dudley. These five are extremely predictable finds in our old plantings
with also an occasional Alexander. This may also mean that they are the ones
that survived best over the years.
The Peach Apple of Montreal is described somewhat in Beach's work. It ripens
here in zone 3 well after Transparent and the flavor develops from sub acid
to richer and more mellow towards the end of it's ripening period. This makes
for several uses one of which is excellent sauce. This Peach is has a strong
conical form, rich yellow with often a bright orange red cheek, hence the
name in Canada Pomme Peche. Because of it's appearance it is sometimes called
Yellow
Delicious by those who still think that the only few apple varieties are
those we find in the grocery store. The background would almost have to be
Russian since very little else was grown in this region back when it was
discovered.
