As far as I know, all the elaeagnus plants have edible
fruits. They have some astringency sometimes even when fully ripe.
Grow your bush and try to find out which
species it is. Autumn olive and goumi look quite a bit alike. The
goumi is more erect growing, not willowy at all. Fruits are larger and
ripen end of May here. Autumn olive ripens later, smaller fruit.
There's another E. pungens with several varieties and hybrids. This blooms
in fall - very fragrant (as are the others) but fruit won't ripen in zone
6. Another benefit is that they all fix nitrogen - in our experience the
autumn olive is the winner here.
