That &$^#%#* Nigerian scam has been around for decades. I have gotten
letters with that scam many years before the internet - and those looked
like they were 12th generation copies of letters written with crayon. The
internet versions are completely unchanged, except that they don't look
handwritten any more. They are so blatant that anyone stupid enough to fall
for them should get the Darwin award for removing themselves from the
genepool for sheer stupidity.
They get their "victims" from programs that harvest names from anything
posted on the internet. I got at least three of them last year. The main
thing is, DON'T REPLY unless you want lots more of them. The best thing you
can do is tell your ISP about them and they may be able to filter them out.
In my case, the sender was using YAHOO mail and I reported it so YAHOO could
close the account.
