Naomi,
I agree there's more to it than lime. I think it likes a maritime climate
i.e.
moderate temperatures, no extremes, high humidity but not rain!
Last year I had my best crop in eight years. We had only two hot days, bloom
and
development ran about two weeks late for most of the year, but harvesting was
only
about one week late. Ditto for Elstar and Fiesta varieties. Because my
trees area sheltered they get no 'rain', only irrigation ... actually, now
that
the trees are eight years old, the roots have grown beyond the shelters so the
roots do get rain, but the tree doesn't .. best of both worlds.
Also I find that CO does better on M26 than on M9 ... something to do with
uptake
of calcium by roots ... M26 is better than M9. Trees must also be
invigorated for
first few years to keep them healthy until danger of anthracnose canker has
passed. Canker affects young trees and mortality is high for CO.
