- Subject: [nafex] Transplanting: Fall vs. Spring
- Date: Mon, 27 Nov 2000 08:13:38 -0500
Voles settle the question for me. Voles easily and often kill young trees
at my place. Transplanting in the Fall leaves an entire winter for the
voles to luxuriate in the very loose soil around the roots. They seem
particularly searching for new sources of food (i.e. roots) just before
things green up in Spring. So I transplant in the Spring, and especially I
buy new trees in the Spring.
Voles like apple roots in particular, as well as the roots of mulberry and
osage orange (the latter used as rootstock for che fruit).
